Introduction

O’Reilly, an online learning platform, uses ON24 to scale their training program and deliver engaging, instructor-led experiences to thousands of learners worldwide. With multi-hour and multi-day sessions, O’Reilly needed a platform that could support interactivity at scale — without compromising on security, flexibility or ease of use. ON24 powers everything from live training to special events, giving O’Reilly the tools to run thousands of sessions annually, collect real-time engagement data and continuously improve the learner experience.

Problem

When we say that O’Reilly has been a customer of ON24 for a long time, we mean it. Back in 2011, when the company was starting their webinar program to support their growing live, instructor-led training, they were on the lookout for a platform that was resilient, scalable and supported thousands of users while preserving interactivity and flexibility.

Yasmina Greco, Director of Online Training at O’Reilly, who was in charge of vetting and demoing the various offerings available at the time, stressed that security was another important factor, “We serve a highly specialized customer base with strict privacy and security requirements. So, we needed a technology partner that could deliver a secure enterprise-grade platform while also collaborating on custom solutions tailored to our unique needs as a business.”  

To top it all off, the team needed the platform to be user-friendly for both their users and presenters.

Solution

ON24 met all the team’s requirements. “ON24 stood out by offering the flexibility, self-service, responsiveness and partnership we required — along with a user-friendly experience for both learners and instructors, global delivery capabilities, seamless workflow integration and robust engagement tools backed by high-quality streaming and analytics,” explained Greco.  

The team primarily uses ON24 for their live online training program that has grown into thousands of courses per year with attendees in the thousands across the globe. Over the years, ON24 has partnered with O’Reilly to implement features that enhance the learner experience. “Learners appreciate the interactive, seamless environment. Being able to ask questions live, participate in polls and react to content in real-time makes sessions more dynamic,” said Greco.

Because their training sessions are multi-hour and multi-day — significantly longer than a typical webinar — Greco emphasizes the importance of engagement and the insights it provides. “We’re interested in increasing learner engagement and enhancing data-informed decision making. ON24 has helped support this with tools that make real-time interaction scalable and measurable.” 

With their own proprietary integrations, they can track when and where learners engage with the training — and when engagement drops off. Examining these insights allows them to continually improve their training. 

Throughout the years, the team has found ways to make producing their sessions easier. They have been able to shave off some of their production time by using AI-driven custom templates, cloning these templates for their different learning series. 

They have also branched out to use the platform for special events and online conferences, including some thought leadership events such as AI Codeconand Live with Tim O’Reilly, featuring candid conversations with their founder and CEO, Tim O’Reilly.

Results

Because O’Reilly doesn’t use ON24 as a marketing channel, they don’t track the traditional metrics such as pipeline or leads created. However, ON24 has helped them significantly increase their sessions, going from 500 per year to 2,000 per year over the past 14 years. According to Greco, “We’ve scaled up the number of events we can run, and with deeper insights, we’ve aligned content more closely with learner needs.”

Greco is optimistic when it comes to their future with ON24. “Our plan is to continue delivering increasingly personalized, high-impact learning experiences through better tools, improved data insights and smarter, more aligned, agile processes.”

When asked what advice she’d give other companies considering ON24, Greco suggested, “Think beyond the webinar use case — ON24 is a data-rich engagement platform. Be clear about your goals going in and take full advantage of their support team. Invest early in training and post-event strategy to maximize ROI.”
