MEDIA ALERT: New Report Shows the State of Virtual Leadership

November 14th, 2013

ON24 and ASTD Survey Examines the Rise of the Remote Workplace

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — November 14, 2013 — ON24, Inc., the global leader in webcasting and virtual communication solutions, has released a report examining the rise of the virtual workplace, training for virtual leaders, and broader virtual leadership trends. The research reveals that while businesses are increasingly moving towards a dispersed and global workplace, they do not yet have the necessary infrastructure in place to support the virtual work model.

Based on a survey of more than 500 managers by the American Society of Training & Development (ASTD), the report finds that while a large percentage of organizations allows employees to work virtually, the right training and resources are rarely provided. Available for download as a summary infopaper, the report includes findings that illustrate the pressing need for better infrastructure and management techniques for virtual employees, such as:

  • 99 percent of respondents said their organizations allow some or all of their employees
to work remotely, while only 20 percent said their companies offer training on how to effectively lead a remote staff.
  • The greatest challenge in training virtual leaders is actually acknowledging that
    the training is necessary.
  • Conflicting cultural messages become a challenge when leading a global workforce.
  • Businesses which emphasize employee engagement benefit from using virtual communications solutions.
  • The key elements to being an effective virtual leader are engagement, trust and rapport.
