COMPANY: Reuters
INDUSTRY: Publishing
TITLE: Reuters Uses ON24's Webcasting Solutions to Reach Online Viewers
SUMMARY: As a leading media company, Reuters leverages ON24 technology to quickly and simply create podcasts.
ON24 APPLICATIONS: ON24 Webcast Center, ON24 Podcasts

2005 was a banner year for Reuters. The famed news agency -- the largest financial information provider in the world and news source for millions of consumers -- had produced stellar financial results, as well as successfully launching several new initiatives.

Reuters wanted to make sure both investors and employees were aware of this great news. That meant making the news available in a wide range of formats: not only the traditional press release, but a Webcast video interview with the company's CEO, Tom Glocer -- and a podcast of that interview that could be downloaded to MP3 players or other portable multimedia devices.

Consumers value convenience, and podcasts allow them to listen to or watch news wherever they are, and on their own schedule. "People are starting to demand podcasts," says Frida Einarson, Reuters' investor relations manager. "They find that it's a really convenient way to listen to news or other information."

Producing a five-minute video of its CEO answering questions about Reuters' financial results was a simple matter for the company's investor relations department. But the department didn't have the expertise to webcast or podcast the interview.

Objective: From Video to Webcast - and Podcast
That's when Reuters' investor relations turned to ON24, which offers a seamless solution bundling together both webcasting and podcasting. Reuters' has been relying on ON24 since last year to deliver Webcasts of earnings reports and product releases. Reuters has also used ON24 for Webcasts of high-profile news events, such as a visit to Reuters' studios by Prime Minister Tony Blair for a discussion of foreign policy or Queen Elizabeth II touring Reuters' offices in Canary Wharf.

ON24 converted the CEO video interview into Web format and provided hosting, making it available on the Internet as both a webcast and a podcast. As a standard part of its services, ON24 also provided Reuters with detailed reporting showing exactly how many people viewed the video as a Webcast, and how many downloaded the podcast.

By taking care of all the entire process of getting the video onto the Web, and onto people's PDAs, ON24 allowed Reuters to focus on getting its message out, rather than getting involved in technical details.

Result: A Simple Process
In fact, says Einarson, she was impressed with how simple the process was, and how quickly Reuters was able to get the video up on the Web as a podcast. As a leading media company, Reuters aims to be at the forefront when it comes to finding news ways of communicating its message, and working with ON24 will enable it to use podcasts to do that. Having worked with ON24 on a number of projects, Reuters has confidence in ON24.
